Trash the Dress?

A popular new trend in wedding photography is called "trash the dress." As this photographer explains, "Despite what the name implies, a trash-the-dress photography session doesn’t necessarily mean destroying the dress; it simply means doing things in your wedding gown that you wouldn't do on your wedding day ... Get it dirty. Get it wet. Roll around in the mud. Drench it in the ocean. Totally trash it, and get some great fun pictures while you do it!"

Sounds good to me! Especially if you got a good deal on your gown :)

Fall Decorations

falltable.jpg I'm a big proponent of decorating your wedding with items you can keep and use in your home afterward. Because my husband and I married in November, we have lots of wonderful fallfront.jpg fall decorations that I get to pull out each year. They remind us of our wedding and they help us not spend money on making home beautiful in the fall.

This is my "table scape" I put together this morning. I bought the purple tablecloth and napkins 70% off at Joann's a couple of years ago. I think I paid $6 for both of them. The silver chargers and coasters were a gift from my mom. They're from Target, so they're not that expensive either.

The basket was apart of a baby gift we got earlier this year. The floral pieces, leaves and candles are all from our wedding decorations. The baby pumpkins were purchased from Wal-Mart for $5 (for 6).

The wreath/candle combo is in croton.jpg our foyer. The wreaths are on sale now from Wal-Mart for $8 ... a little more than I normally like to spend, but these days convenience is more valuable to me. I don't have time to go to multiple stores to find or make one for cheaper.

Again, the candles and leaves are from our wedding. I bought the string of pearls for a quarter at a yard sale two years ago and have used it in another decoration in my house before.

The plant pictured here is called a croton. These are fabulous to decorate for fall with. I have two potted crotons on either side of my front door. They're exploding with rich fall colors. Each plant was $12 from Wal-Mart. These are in abundance in Florida and do well in moderate sun. We have several planted along the walkway to our front door as well. They're hearty, big, beautiful and easy to maintain.

New Marriage Stats

cake2.jpg This post doesn't have anything to do with saving money on your wedding, but since I do have "weddings" as a category on the site, I thought I'd share the latest information from the Census Bureau about marriage. U.S. News and World Report says only about half of married Americans make it to their 25th anniversary. That's down 70% from those who married in the late 1950s and make it to their 25th. The rest were widowed, divorced or separated. The Census Bureau also reported that most Americans who marry still get married just once. About 12.5% of people marry twice and 3% marry three times. At least that's some encouraging news!

Target Bridal Review

A while back, a reader named Brittney, tipped us off that Target was launching a discount bridal line. Brittney bought two dresses from the site and had this review about her experience. Thanks for the information! Anyone else out there bought bridal dresses from Target?

"I bought a wedding gown and bridesmaid's dress from the Target Isaac Mizrahi collection. I was interested in seeing the quality and how it would compare to something such as David's Bridal. Target generally has clothing I find acceptable to wear to work, and I'm especially happy with the Isaac Mizrahi line, however I wasn't sure how the bridal dresses would compare to David's Bridal or other common bridal line."

Avoid Wedding Debt

This editorial in the Arizona Republic reminds us that couples shouldn't go into debt when planning for a wedding. Spend as much as you want—just don't spend what you don't have, or what could be better spent elsewhere ...

Wedding Shower Ideas

giftred.jpg
A friend of mine e-interviewed me for a wedding shower article she’s working on. I thought I’d post some of my responses for the blog. Enjoy!

Timing
• There are no hard and fast rules on this one. Most find that a month or two months before the event help avoid the stress of having too many wedding-related events before the big day.

Who’s Invited

• 1. Don’t invite people to the shower who aren’t invited to the wedding! 2. Be sensitive to the ones throwing you the shower. Take into consideration their budget (the more people, the more expensive the party) and the shower’s location (how many can the space accommodate?).

Invites

• There are so many economical and modern designs out there today—from invitations at Target to customizable online designs at sites like www.paper-source.com—even at places like Costco.com!

Destination Weddings: Hawaii

weddingshawaii.jpg I received an email from a Cheap Ways to Tie the Knot reader named Esteban last night. His girlfriend bought him the book as they plan on getting engaged and having a wedding in Hawaii. “We are thinking of having our wedding in Kona, Hawaii because her parents currently have a condo and live part of the year there,” he wrote. “She also has some sentimental reasons for wanting it there. I want it to be wherever she'll be happy, and Hawaii is pretty awesome. It would be outdoors, with the ocean behind us. We are going to be on a budget and we still need to research but $5,000 would be ideal. I currently live in Dallas, TX, and my girlfriend is moving here in some months. She is in Hawaii right now and is trying to find out as much information as possible.”

He asked what advice I could post on the site about “cheap ways to get married somewhere that's far away and still be on a budget.” One of his main concerns was the cost for friends and family members to get there.

In addition to my advice in this post, please post your ideas for Esteban and others to check out!

Cheap Ways to ‘Save the Date’

savethedate.jpgA savvy Cheap Ways To reader named Buddy Overstreet sent in this fabulous tip. I love the creativity and the excellent and economical execution of the idea. Enjoy!

“I really enjoy your ‘Cheap Ways To’ ideas and wanted to share our recent ‘cheap’ success.

“We were looking for an economical ‘save the date’ card to mail to our guests for our summer wedding. I dabble in graphic design so I was convinced we could do something on the cheap. We liked the idea of a photo booth concept so I put my design skills into action. We took a bunch of photos of us in different fun poses holding the signs ‘we're’ ‘getting’ ‘married’, and the date. I then laid it out in photoshop with the look of a strip of photos from a photobooth. So far no money spent, but no product yet either.

“The savings really happened on the printing. I laid my finished product out on a 4X6 file (I could fit two strips) and uploaded the jpg to snap fish. I then ordered the prints from snapfish and was able to pick them up in an hour from my local Walgreens. I got 150 photos (300 total photostrips) for $30 and I didn't even have to pay for shipping. I thought this was an incredible value for the quality of a photo print job. It definitely beats the printing on the home deskjet. I included a picture of our card.

“Thanks for all the economical inspiration.”

Thanks for sending this in, Buddy!

The Most Expensive Wedding Day of the Year?

smallwedding.jpg Sounds like couples are jumping on the chance to marry on 7/7/07. Those who are planning their ceremony on that day might find that they have competition for wedding vendors and services, which is likely to raise the costs of those services. Brides and grooms beware! Here's an article outlining seven ways to plan a wedding with less stress on that day.

Surviving the Wedding Season

gifts.jpg A reader posted a question a few weeks ago asking about how to save money attending weddings, even being a part of them. Great question! I think we all have had the experience where we get hit with nine weddings in one year, three of which we're asked to be apart of.

I remember the first wedding I was asked to be in. I was 9 and my older cousin was getting married and asked me to be a junior bridesmaid. It was the most glamorous event I’d ever attended or been apart of. That wedding was my first exposure to the fantastical world of weddings and all of their tulle bows, romantic couples and towering white cakes. Since then, I would lie on my pink bedspread in my heart-covered wallpapered room and daydream about the moment I would be a bride.

But that moment wouldn’t come for another 15 years. In the meantime, I grew up, went to college, made some new friends. Those friends launched what I can only surmise was a grand conspiracy against my bank account.

Dresses on the Cheap

dress.jpgThe first line of thinking for a bargain bride is to find a dress you could borrow from a friend who is the same size. My aunt wore my mother’s wedding dress a year after my mom was married. Was she scarred for life? Hardly. Each of their personal styles were so different no one noticed it was the same dress. The accessories and bridal party style gave the dress an entirely different look.

Or maybe your mom is hoping you’ll wear her wedding gown—if it’s anywhere near your size, don’t write it off. Take it to a seamstress who can suggest some alterations to make it fit your personality or feel like a more modern dress (with your mother’s permission, of course).

Visit local consignment shops to find used wedding dresses. You can find new and used gowns online at sites like: craigslist.org, eBay.com, www.nearlynewbridal.com and a broker site called www.usedweddingdresses.com.

Flowers on a Budget

rose.jpg Today's my three-year wedding anniversary. My wonderful husband Jeff had some gorgeous red roses delivered to the office today.

The anniversary has me recalling my frugal wedding and the book it spawned, Cheap Ways to Tie the Knot. In honor of that, I offer some tips on flowers from the book:

FLOWER TIPS
• Have your wedding scheduled during a season when the church is decorated already (perhaps after Mother’s Day or during Christmas or Easter).
• Avoid February when flower prices skyrocket. Paying too much for flowers is not romantic.
• Use in season and easy accessible flowers. Your florist can fill you in on what in season flowers will complement each other (like roses and carnations).
• Mix fake greenery in with real flowers. It will save time and the greenery won’t wilt before the flowers do.

Alternative Wedding Gifts

This article from The Herald in the U.K. is about the growing trend of couples who are asking for alternative gifts (like environmentally friendly products) or asking for guests to donate to charity instead of traditional gifts. An excerpt:

"Alternative wedding-gift lists are the latest must-do for 21st-century couples with an ethical, social or environmental conscience. 'I guess with the huge cost of weddings and all the excesses involved, an alternative gift list is a way for couples to give something back,' says Andy Hickey, founder of the website www.alternativeweddinglist.co.uk."

Cheap Date Ideas

sunset.jpg

You can't buy moments like these. This was taken at a park and dock in Mount Dora, about 30 minutes from where we live, this past Saturday evening. Walks on docks and in the park make great cheap dates (especially if ice cream is involved). Always carry a digital camera with you to capture moments and memories. Here are more ideas for cheap dates or group gatherings.

Two Big Mistakes

An article in the Orlando Sentinel yesterday outlined two major mistakes brides and grooms make when planning their wedding: relying far too heavily on Web searches to find wedding vendors, and not asking for — and carefully vetting — personal references for them. The article talks about one bride who lost half of her wedding budget to a con artist. Buyer beware!

How to Preserve the Wedding Cake

cake.jpg Here's a brief article with great ideas for the anniversary wedding cake. Columnist Jane Greig says, yes you can freeze cake for a year, but don't expect it to taste good. If you do want to store it for a year, wrap it in an airtight container, then wrap it again with plastic wrap and again with aluminum foil.

But alternatively, she suggests, when you get your wedding cake, ask the baker if he/she would allow you to purchase a discounted wedding topper. A baker quoted in the story says they often give a free one-year anniversary cake to couples (who purchase a multi-tiered wedding cake) in most instances.

More Cheap Wedding Tips

cake.jpg I had a great hour-long radio interview this morning with Lynne from WBCL-FM, a 50,000 watt Christian station that broadcasts to the Fort Wayne, IN area at 90.3 FM. She took several callers who had questions and tips for weddings. One suggestion was so fabulous I just have to pass it along:

One caller suggested having individual cakes made to sit on each reception table and seating a pre-assigned table host at the table who would bring her cake-cutter from her own wedding to cut and server the cake. The individual cakes would be cheaper than a big one and the personal touch would add a unique memory for all the weddings guests.

ReadyMade Magazine's New Issue

The new issue of ReadyMade magazine (the publication that inspired the look and feel of my book, Cheap Ways to Tie the Knot) landed on my desk today—and the entire thing is on weddings. Like cheap, DIY weddings. Like what my entire book is about. My book would have been perfect for coverage in it. Unfortunately, about the time this issue was being planned the book wasn't even designed yet. You win some, you lose some. But, if you like my book, you'll definitely want to check out this issue of ReadyMade.

"The Love Issue" covers:
• 69 Ways to Woo
• Nuptial Know-How (ingenious ways to beat the wedding industry at their own game)
• Six Irresistible Proposals
• Wedding crib sheet: inspirational invitations, tree-trunk chuppah, tabletoppers
• personalized matchbooks, diy ring pillow
• buyer's guide

We'll still send them a copy of the book. Pray that they'll review it in their June issue!

9 Cheap Wedding Tips

A friend of mine just emailed with the news she got engaged over Christmas ... Lots of folks get engaged during the season and plan for summer weddings. Here are some general principles to keep in mind when planning a wedding to keep your overall costs down. Afterall, the wedding is about getting married, not spending your life savings, right?

Nine Ways to Stretch Your Money

1. Pick a slower time of year (January, February or November)

2. Shop around and negotiate prices and packages with vendors. Don’t ever settle for more than you think you should be paying.

3. Get your hands dirty. The more you’re willing to do, the less you’ll end up paying. Get your friends and family in the act of addressing envelopes, folding programs, creating favors, and making a headpiece or a veil.

4. Limit the guest list. Most caterers charge per-person, so the difference between 100 guests and 150 is significant.

5. Shop anywhere but a traditional bridal salon for your gown. Think eBay, off the rack, or a local seamstress.

6. Consider "drop-off catering." The caterer delivers and sets up already prepared food. Or, have family friends cater the reception for you.

7. Ask friends to take photos at your bridal showers, rehearsal dinner, pre-ceremony and reception. Hire a professional only for the formal portraits and ceremony shots.

8. For your reception food, consider a buffet instead of a sit-down meal; or host a high tea; a dessert reception; brunch or luncheon instead of a multi-course meal.

9. Hire a local music student(s) if you’re set on having live musicians at the ceremony and reception.

Check out my upcoming book filled with more tips, Cheap Ways to Tie the Knot: How to Plan a Church Wedding for Less Than $5,000, releasing on Feb. 14. If you're in the Orlando area, come party with us Monday, Feb. 6, from 7:30-10 p.m. for the book's release at our offices. Email me for directions.

Renting Apartments for Vacation

A co-worker of mine is getting married tonight. I spoke with him yesterday about where his family is staying while in town for the wedding. He said his apartment complex has a “guest suite” they rented out for his parents. Just $70 a night and it’s a whole furnished apartment with a big screen TV to boot. Not a bad way to ride. He also said he found out that the apartment (and many other apartments) will rent out empty apartments for cheaper than a local hotel room if you ask (a little Google search on the topic turns up that this is a common practice outside the U.S. already). My co-worker said he plans to try out this tip on their first post-honeymoon vacation.
