Sales, Sales, Sales

It's tax-free weekend in some states, plus: Dillard's has an extra 40% off their permanent markdowns, and The Children's Place has some wicked deals on Amazon.com. I bought about 10 items, used my vouchers from my Amazon Chase credit card, and only paid .87!

Cheap Ways to See the Opera

Our local independent movie theater is joining a new series of operas being shown around the country in surround sound. For $20 a ticket, this might be the closest I'll get to seeing a real Italian opera! The showings are filmed in Italy's famed La Scala opera house.

Do Something Good for Your Soul

Do something good for your soul this holiday weekend by giving something away -- whether it be goods, services or cash. Here are some ideas:

1. Mow a neighbor's yard when they're not home.
2. Gather up some clothes and household goods and call The Salvation Army on Monday for a pickup.
3. Clean up a public area (like a dirty toilet seat) when you encounter it.
4. Pick up trash on the ground that you didn't put there.
5. Send a card to a widow and/or include a check to help with their expenses.
6. Read a book to your child or niece/nephew.
7. Take pictures of a friend.
8. Bake a cake and take it to a neighbor you haven't met or don't know well.
9. Pray for someone who's on your mind, then send them an email to let them know.
10. Leave a note and a snack in the mailbox for your mail carrier tomorrow.

It's easy for life to be all about you. Make an effort to serve someone else. Mark a day on your calendar to do one or more of these each month.

Free Entertainment

Check out your community's free Independence Day events today and this weekend for some cheap and fun entertainment -- especially since the malls and stores are closing early (not that you would be shopping anyway!)

Dillards Sale

My mom is a big fan of Dillard's and they're currently having a holiday weekend sale -- extra 30 off markdowns. I checked it out today and they have quite a few ECCO shoes on sale, which is rare. I got a pair of tennis shoes for $53 -- originally $120. My husband got a pair of casual shoes for $101 -- normally $180. Mom got 5 outfits for the baby -- each for $14 or less!
